چکیده
A motion-induced optical bistability is shown for a metal nanoparticle dimer that is plasmon coupled and bound with dispersion (colloidal) forces. The effect does not require any material nonlinearity.

Optical forces between coupled plasmonic nanoparticles near metal surfaces and negative index material waveguides
We present a study of light-induced forces between two coupled plasmonic nanoparticles above various slab geometries including a metallic half-space and a negative index material (NIM) slab waveguide. We investigate optical forces by nonperturbatively calculating the scattered electric field via a Green function technique which includes the particle interactions to all orders. For excitation fr...
متن کاملIntrinsic optical bistability in nanomechanical metamaterials at milliwatt power levels
We report the first demonstration of optical bistability in nanomechanical metamaterials arrays of plasmonic or dielectric resonators on flexible nano-membranes. Bistability results from the nonlinearity of the near-field forces induced by light. Optical bistability has received considerable attention over many years as it represents a fundamental building block for applications in optical swit...
متن کاملLight Induced Further Agglomeration of Metal Particles
The observation of an unusual light-induced agglomeration phenomenon that occurs besides the trapping of the gold nanoparticles aggregates (GNAs) has been observed. The observed agglomerate has a 60-100 μm donut-shaped metal microstructure with the rate of formation dependent on the laser power used. In this paper, the forces involved and the mechanism of this further agglomeration phenomenon a...
متن کاملOptical trapping and light-induced agglomeration of gold nanoparticle aggregates
This paper demonstrates the optical trapping of micron-sized gold nanoparticle aggregates GNAs with a TEM00 mode laser at 532 nm and reports the observation of an unusual light-induced agglomeration phenomenon that occurs besides the trapping of the GNAs. The observed agglomerate has a 60–100 m donut-shaped metal microstructure with the rate of formation dependent on the laser power used. Citra...
متن کاملPolymorphic nanoparticles as all-optical memory elements.
A nanoparticle undergoing light-induced transformations between structural phases with different optical properties is an inheritably bistable structure and this bistability can be used to create a resonator-free optical memory element, operating at very low power levels. We experimentally demonstrate this memory functionality using a film of gallium nanoparticles, and we present a method for d...
